Biking/Hiking
The Rockwood Trailhead was the first one developed on the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) in the early 1990s, and it offers ample parking, a visitor's center, sanitary facilities, and convenient access to the businesses just across the river in downtown Rockwood. (A cellphone booster at the Visitor's Center provides cellular access within a 25-foot radius of the building.) Located adjacent to the Trailhead are a well-stocked bike shop and several bed & breakfasts.
A short ride south on the trail brings you to Husky Haven Campground, and a few miles beyond you'll find Wymp's Gap Fossil Quarry where you can dig for fossils. Pedal several more miles and you'll cross the scenic Salisbury Viaduct, a 1901-foot long, 101-foot high restored railroad trestle that carries the trail over the Casselman River, Route 219, and a main line of the CSX Railroad.
The Rockwood Trailhead offers close and convenient access to the trail when arriving in Western Pennsylvania via the Pennsylvania Turnpike ( directions).
Hikers also can enjoy the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail (LHHT) which traverses the mountain ridges for 70 miles between Ohiopyle and Johnstown.
The GAP and LHHT are both part of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail. Additional info: www.potomacheritage.net

Laurel Ridge State Park, part of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, has the best cross-country ski area in PA with more than 20 miles of groomed trails.
